My first race experience…

Think back to the time in your life when you tried something new. I remember being so excited to see all the different kinds of people run pass me when I use to do the fun walks. I would say to my friend wow what an inspiration. She use to reply if they can do it so can we. Running was something I always wanted to do. But I never had the courage to even start. Well, I thought  that I could never run until I joined Itheko.

With much excitement week after week it’s announced how many Itheko members have participated in the various races. In addition to that I also heard many stories about Fuad’s motivational talks whilst running.

I entered for my first race on the 12th of February 2011. I had no time goals for the race. Other than achieving a good time I focused on having a good time.
Seconds before the race I had mixed feelings like “ I must be crazy”, what was I thinking?

Well that 10 km race was an awesome experience, just as I anticipated it would be.
Have you ever felt that way about something? You eagerly undertake a goal and in the midst of it comes a moment of struggle, and did I struggle, in the dying moments of the race.

I felt a bit embarrassed when I saw my group run ahead and I couldn’t keep up with them. I felt defeated. But then I realized something that my goal was merely to finish the race.
How often in life do we compare ourselves to others, which is natural and feel disappointed in ourselves when we really shouldn’t.

As I crossed the finish line, I felt elated and proud of my accomplishment.

You decide your race and you decide your own pace.

A heartfelt thanks to Fuad for your inspiration.

Thank you Itheko.
