After exactly 8weeks with the club my husband decided that he wants to do his first 10km race. Adnaan (husband) always had problems with his joints and knees but was in fact doing quite well during training. That was my motivation to try and do better. We never missed training since we started. When he mentioned that he wanted to do the race – I silently thought to myself, I wasn’t ready yet.
I felt all nervous when we got there – but after being introduced around I started to relax. Coach said he will be coaching the first timers all the way to finish. What a blessing!!!
Off we went. I saw the 3km mark and I honestly thought to myself, I would never be able to make it to 10km. Remember, this is the first time running on one, not stopping for cars or a water break. Keeping the same pace and listening to instructions from coach – chin up, deep breaths into the stomach and then slowing down a bit when someone falls behind. Before the 6km mark there was a slight bridge and I remembered what we were taught in training – short quick steps and we all made it to the top.
Pass the 7km mark one of the Itheko ladies were running in front of us. Coach announced that she was 50 years. Every time we seem to get close to her – off she goes. She knew we were behind her. Coach said – “Do you know what she is thinking? There is no way that I am going to allow these youngsters to pass me by”. Coach kept us going – “One more time around the common and we will be finish”.
Then I just heard Mariam shouting “Shereen are you feeling the same way I do”. I suppose, by then everyone was experiencing their own discomfort.
Aunty 50 was still going strong in front of me. As we reached the gate to enter the field to finishing – I thought I am not going make it to the finish line.
I MADE IT… 1h27m, I saw on the clock as I looked up.
Finishing in time is the best feeling ever!!! My proudest moment – I received my first running medal. All the huffing and puffing was worth it. Guess what – you are definitely going to see me at the next race.
Thanks to coach and fellow runners for all the motivation and encouragement during race.
I ran my first race yesterday and want to share my experience to inspire those that never ran a race before.
I was under alot of pressure before and was always nagged by Faldie, Adilah, Ebrahim, Fuad, Naz, Shiehaam and so many more to run a race and I always said I’m not interested in races and will only do training to keep fit and healthy.
Thursday evening at training I was put on the spot to run the race and thought to myself let me do it once and get everyone off my shoulders. I had nightmares, couldnt sleep saturday evening and was feeling nauseous all day Saturday. On our way to register I told Faldie if he really loves me he will take me home again and he said he does love me but will take me home after the race.
At the START I couldnt believe it was me standing there. I had butterflies in my stomach. After 3km mark and started feeling tired and hot and wanted to give up. But my coach, EBRAHIM was so patient and convinced me to keep going and that I can do it. Ebrahim, Shukran for believing in me and all your patience you inspired me so much and I would have never been able to finish this race without you, I salute you my friend.
The FINISH was the most amazing and I thought I didnt make it within cut off time but felt so good when I heard it was 1hour and 30mins. The support and applause by all the Itheko members was fantastic and very emotional and I want to thank everyone who has been there to cheer me on.
To the Itheko family you are all amazing and I’m so fortunate to be part of this great running club.
Our vision is transforming lives and improving the health of our communities through running - it's about inspiring and supporting each other and having fun, as well as competing in races and winning medals.
We cater for everyone, and especially those of you who have never run before. Many members started as reluctant beginners who did not believe that they could run, and have now transformed their physical and mental health.
How can I join Itheko? Join us at our training base in Willow Rd, Observatory. Training is at 6pm on Monday & Wednesday evenings for beginners and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for everyone else. After a 4-8 week beginners program you'll be celebrating finishing your first 10K race!
